48 Details 48.1 Each transformer, as a routine factory test, shall be capable of withstanding without breakdown for 1 minute a 60 Hz essentially sinusoidal potential of: a) 1000 Vapplied between primary live parts and dead metal parts; and b) 1000 V plus twice the rated voltage of the high voltage winding between primary live parts and secondary live parts. 48.2 In place of the 1-minute test described in 48.1, a 1-second test may be conducted if the test potential is increased to 120 percent of the value indicated in 48.1. In either case, the transformer is not required to be in a heated condition. 48.3 The manufacturer shall provide test equipment and facilities for conducting the test described in 48.1. A test transformer with a capacity less than 500 VA may be used in tests by the manufacturer if the transformer is provided with a voltmeter to directly measure the applied potential. The test equipment is to include an audible or visible indication of breakdown (or both). In the event of breakdown, manual reset of the test-equipment control switch is required, or an automatic reject of the unit under test is to result. Each transformer shall be tested, with acceptable results, before it leaves the factory. The manufacturer’s record of test results and rejections shall be available for review. 48.4 Five production samples from daily production of each transformer shall be subjected to the strain- relief test described in 37.1 and 37.3 as a routine factory test (37.2, 37.4, and 37.5 are not applicable).
49 General 49.1 The electrical rating of a transformer shall include the primary voltage, the frequency, the output in watts or volt-amperes, and all secondary voltages. If an ampere rating is included, it shall be consistent with the other ratings. 49.2 The rating of the unit shall include the type of output current such as AC only, DC only, or AC or DC. 49.3 The primary-voltage rating shall not be more than 125 V. The secondary-voltage rating shall not be more than 30 VAC or 42 V DC. Exception: An interrupted DC output (see 28.1) shall not be more than 25 VDC. MARKINGS 50 General 50.1 A transformer shall be legibly and permanently marked with: a) The manufacturer’s name, trademark, trade name, or other descriptive marking by which the organization responsible for the transformer can be identified; b) The date of manufacture, month and year; c) A distinctive catalog number or the equivalent; d) The electrical rating; and e) The designation “Toy Transformer” or “Hobby Transformer.” 50.2 When the date of manufacture is abbreviated or in a nationally accepted conventional code, or in a code affirmed by the manufacturer, the date code shall: a) Not repeat in less than 10 years; and b) Not require reference to the manufacturer’s records to determine when the product was manufactured.
